Artist's Statement
I am drawn to darkness and the luminosity of the night, by the patterns that the individual perceives and creates around themselves. Central to my work is my fascination in the viewer's ability to build on the slightest hint of form and colour made by an artist to create a world outside and to connect with it. My work always concerns illusion, the difficulty facing all human knowledge and the inability to communicate matters which are not already held within an individual. The subject is the crisis of solitary existence and my paintings, luminous and solitary, question what there is outside of the individual and how it can be communicated - if indeed it can. In this sense I consider all of my work to be Metaphysical Art, within a contemporary vision of urban realism.
My exploration of minimalist black and white paintings are a logical extension of my philosophy and attempt to create something out of the merest suggestion of form stripped of colour and detail, relying heavily on the perception of the viewer. The substance is the viewer's and this becomes a metaphor for the world that all human beings provide outside of themselves, which is wholly dependent on their perception.
